Alchemy: Navigating Spiritual Transformation
As we move through this year and into the fall, many people are feeling life intensify. Emotional waves feel stronger, old habits surface, and familiar structures no longer seem to fit. These energetic shifts are not here to punish us they are here to initiate us. They invite us to shed limiting beliefs, break long-standing patterns, and step into deeper alignment with who we truly are.
What can feel like chaos is often the first sign of renewal. At its core, this is an opportunity to release what no longer serves and consciously create more joy, clarity, and purpose.
Through this change, we have the opportunity to choose: surrender into the change or exert our ego. Many of us have been taught that “God helps those who help themselves.” Where do we draw the line between letting go and ego? The more we are able to release attachment to the outcome as we transform, the easier and quicker the process will be. We are human BEings, not human DOings. This should be a clue here.
Through my own transformation, I’ve come to recognize that spiritual awakening follows a process. This mirrors what the ancient alchemists discovered not the turning of lead into gold, but the refinement of consciousness itself. I refer to this journey as The Four Stages of High Alchemy, and you may recognize yourself somewhere within it.
The Four Stages of Spiritual Alchemy & Personal Growth
🔹 Nigredo – The Unaware State
Nigredo, traditionally associated with darkness or “blackening,” is where the journey begins.
In this stage, life can feel heavy, repetitive, confusing, or even hopeless. We may feel that circumstances are simply happening to us. The same relationship patterns appear again and again. Financial struggles repeat themselves. We encounter similar conflicts with different people. We may change jobs, partners, homes, or circumstances only to discover that the underlying problem seems to follow us.
At this point, we may not yet recognize the common denominator: ourselves.
This does not mean we are to blame for everything that happens to us. Rather, Nigredo represents a state in which we have not yet become fully conscious of the beliefs, emotional wounds, ancestral patterns, expectations, fears, and unconscious programming influencing our choices and reactions.
We may feel powerless because we have not yet discovered where our power actually resides.
Nigredo often carries the energy of:
- Feeling stuck or trapped
- Repeating unhealthy patterns
- Blaming circumstances or other people
- Feeling disconnected from purpose
- Experiencing frustration, resentment, or helplessness
- Believing there is no way to change our circumstances
- Living primarily in reaction rather than conscious choice
Eventually, something begins to shift. There comes a point when staying the same becomes more painful than changing.
That is when Nigredo has done its job.
🔹 Albedo – The Purification Process
Albedo, or “whitening,” represents purification, awakening, and the beginning of conscious self-examination.
Something inside us begins whispering: “There must be more than this.”
We may not know what “more” looks like yet, but we know we can no longer continue living exactly as we have been.
This is often the stage people describe as a spiritual awakening. We begin questioning assumptions we once accepted without examination. We become curious about why certain experiences keep repeating. Instead of asking only, “Why is this happening to me?” we begin asking: “What is this showing me?”
That question changes everything.
Old beliefs, unresolved emotions, childhood wounds, ancestral patterns, fears, and energetic blocks may begin rising into consciousness. Not because we are going backward, but because we are finally ready to see what has been operating beneath the surface.
This is the purification process. And purification is not always comfortable. Albedo can feel chaotic because the old identity is beginning to dissolve before the new one has fully formed. What once felt familiar may no longer feel acceptable, yet we may not know what should replace it.
Relationships may change. Friendships may fall away. Careers may suddenly feel meaningless. Spiritual beliefs may expand or collapse altogether. We begin cleaning out the internal closets.
The question becomes: What am I carrying that no longer belongs in the life I am trying to create?
For many people, Albedo begins at a breaking point—a moment when movement, any movement, feels preferable to remaining where they are.
But the breaking point may actually be the breakthrough point.
🔹 Citrinitis – The Shift from Fear to Love
Citrinitas, sometimes called “yellowing,” represents illumination. This is where spiritual understanding begins becoming embodied experience. It is one thing to understand intellectually that fear limits us. It is quite another to recognize fear as it arises and consciously choose something different.
In Citrinitas, we begin participating in our transformation rather than merely observing it. Fear becomes an opportunity to practice trust. Shame becomes an invitation to practice self-compassion. Judgment becomes an opportunity for acceptance. Resentment becomes an invitation to examine forgiveness. Self-doubt becomes an opportunity to remember our own worth.
The goal is not to eliminate every uncomfortable emotion. Emotions are information. They show us where something within us is asking for attention. The transformation occurs when we stop allowing those emotions to unconsciously run our lives.
Citrinitas is the stage in which personal responsibility becomes empowering rather than burdensome. We begin recognizing ourselves as active participants and co-creators in our lives.
We are no longer simply trying to escape what we don’t want.
We begin consciously choosing what we do want.
🔹 Rubedo – The Sacred Union of Opposites
Rubedo, or “reddening,” represents integration, embodiment, and completion.
This is the sacred marriage within. The Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine energies come into greater balance not as gender roles, but as complementary forces within consciousness.
The Divine Feminine receives, intuits, nurtures, creates, and allows. The Divine Masculine focuses, protects, acts, structures, and directs.
When these energies are out of balance, we may spend our lives either forcing or waiting, controlling or surrendering, doing without receiving, or dreaming without taking action.
Once Rubedo is reached we no longer need someone or something outside ourselves to complete us. Relationships can become opportunities for connection rather than attempts to fill an internal emptiness. Purpose becomes something we embody rather than something we endlessly search for.
We begin living from soul alignment.
This does not mean life suddenly becomes perfect or that challenges disappear. Rather, we meet those challenges differently because we are no longer fragmented inside ourselves.
We know who we are. We trust our inner guidance. We understand that discomfort does not necessarily mean we are on the wrong path.
Transformation begins when you have lived in Nigredo long enough that you are no longer willing to tolerate it. That moment of “enough” signals readiness for renewal. The path forward requires focus, honesty, and a willingness to release the beliefs that once kept you safe but now keep you small.
From Unconscious Pattern to Conscious Creation
At its heart, spiritual alchemy is the process of remembering that transformation begins within.
We move from: Unconsciousness → Awareness → Conscious Choice → Integration
The “gold” the alchemist seeks is not something outside us.
It is the Self that emerges when the layers of fear, conditioning, limitation, and unconscious programming are gradually released. The journey asks for honesty. It asks for courage.
It asks us to examine the beliefs we have mistaken for truth and the identities we have mistaken for ourselves.
Support is abundant on this journey through healers, therapists, energy workers, and spiritual guides. You do not have to walk it alone, and I am here to support you as well.
Wherever you are right now is not a mistake. It is a perfect starting point. With intention and commitment, you can begin moving forward toward greater joy, alignment, and wholeness.
